12th August: Wednesday’s Football Accumulator – 6/1

19:45 Rangers vs St. Johnstone

Watching Celtic drop points away at Kilmarnock in just their second contest of the season and also having their next two appearances scrapped due to off the field issues, Rangers will know that Wednesday night is a golden opportunity to gain and early advantage. With some around Ibrox believing that this is their best chance to mount a serious title charge after not lifting the Premiership crown in nine years, Steven Gerrard s men certainly bounced back from their Europa League defeat at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen out in Germany last week. Along with opening the 2020/2021 campaign with what was a deserved 1-0 win away at Aberdeen in a contest that could have been a real banana skin for the former England midfielder, Rangers put on a real clinic …

Harvey Elliott ready to push himself ‘to the max’ in Liverpool quadruple bid

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott accepts he will have to continue to push himself “to the max” as injuries threaten to derail the club’s bid for an unprecedented quadruple.

The 20-year-old played the full 120 minutes of Sunday’s Carabao Cup extra-time win over Chelsea just four days after playing the entirety of the 4-1 victory against Luton, in which he scored a 90th-minute goal and had to be hauled off the turf at the end of the game.

His previous four appearances had all been as a substitute and amounted to just 153 minutes, but with 12 first team players unavailable through injury, fringe and academy players are now finding they are having to play more significant roles.

Odemwingie and Jones swap clubs

Stoke City have announced the completion of a deal that sees Kenwyne Jones and Cardiff City forward Peter Odemwingie swap clubs.

Nigeria international Odemwingie, who only moved to Cardiff from West Brom last September, has signed an 18-month deal at the Britannia Stadium and is expected to be available for Stoke s Premier League game at Sunderland on Wednesday.

Odemwingie s arrival sees Jones, an £8million arrival from Sunderland in August 2010, move in the opposite direction.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes expressed his excitement at the capture of Odemwingie, who scored a solitary Premier League goal for Cardiff in 15 appearances.

Hughes told the club s official website: We re delighted to have signed Peter. Things haven t perhaps gone as well for him at Cardiff a…

Robinho feels at home at Milan

Former Manchester City striker Robinho said Saturday that he felt at home at new club AC Milan, a team he claimed had Brazilian blood .

In Milan I feel like I m at home. I have some great friends like Dinho, Pato and Thiago Silva, he told la Gazetta dello sport newspaper.

The rossonera has Brazilian blood. You can understand why I m pleased with the transfer.

I prefer not to speak about City, said the 26-year-old of his English experience, adding that he dreamt of a Champions League final between Milan and Barcelona.

They re the two best teams at the moment. Milan has made some good signings. On paper, we re good, but we have to become a team that wins on the pitch.

The pundits wrote us off – Wagner hails Huddersfield´s fairytale promotion to Premier League

David Wagner said it was an unbelievable story and a fairytale after Huddersfield Town won promotion to the Premier League for the first time in the club s history.

Town drew all three of their Championship play-off matches but triumphed 4-3 on penalties against Reading at Wembley on Monday, having also needed spot-kicks to get through a tight semi-final against Sheffield Wednesday.

Wagner appointed Huddersfield manager in November 2015  led his side to promotion despite working on a small budget compared to the biggest clubs in the Championship.

And the German hailed the club s achievement having prevailed against the odds to reach the top division for the first time since 1972.

The Terriers are back in the top flight for the first time since 1972.

Knocking out Barcelona proves Juventus´ greatness – Bonucci

Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci said the club proved their greatness by knocking out Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 3-0 aggregate victory on Wednesday.

The Serie A leaders were strong favourites to progress having won the first leg 3-0 and held the Catalans to a goalless draw at Camp Nou to move into the last four, ending Barca s 15-match home winning streak in Europe under Luis Enrique in the process.

Bonucci believes twice recording a clean sheet against the feted frontline of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez demonstrates the strength of Juve, who were beaten in the final by Barcelona in the 2014-15 season.

We knew they were coming to push us high, running a few risks at the back, but we did well to be united and compact …

Alli says Spurs paid for ´arrogance´ in Man Utd defeat

Dele Alli put Tottenham s disappointing performance in Wednesday s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United down to arrogance borne out of the winning start they had made to Jose Mourinho s tenure.

Mourinho was appointed as Mauricio Pochettino s successor last month and had overseen three successive victories in his first three matches at the helm.

Wednesday brought Mourinho s first return to Old Trafford as a manager since he was sacked by the club in December 2018, but Spurs failed to continue their recent resurgence.

Marcus Rashford produced a talismanic display for the Red Devils, scoring both of their goals either side of a spectacular strike from Alli, who arguably more than anyone else has been re-energised by Mourinho s hiring.

But Alli s goal aside, Spurs…
